In short

Rishikesh is a pilgrimage town in Uttarakhand where the Ganga leaves the Himalayan foothills. Yoga visitors come for its ashrams, among them Swami Sivananda's Divine Life Society and Parmarth Niketan, for the evening Ganga aarti and for courses. Go between October and April, apply for the e-Visa on the official site, and check any school before you pay.

Yogide is written from Rishikesh. This chapter gives you what can be checked: what the ashrams publish about themselves, official visa rules, the weather records of the India Meteorological Department, festival dates confirmed by the organisers. It never gives a list of "the best" ashrams or schools, and no review is invented. Every fact below was checked on 16 October 2026.

Why Rishikesh, for a yogi

Rishikesh sits in the state of Uttarakhand, where the Ganga comes out of the last Himalayan valleys before the plains of Haridwar. For centuries it was a halt for pilgrims walking north and a place of hermits. In the twentieth century, a handful of institutions made it known far beyond India.

  • The Divine Life Society. According to its official site, Swami Sivananda, a doctor who had worked in Malaya, reached Rishikesh in 1924, took sannyasa, and lived for ten years in a small hut in Swarg Ashram. In January 1934 he moved to the west bank, where the Maharaja of Tehri gave land, and on 13 January 1936 the Divine Life Society Trust was registered. The Sivananda Ashram in Muni ki Reti is still its headquarters, for a society that its site says counts more than 300 branches. Many "Sivananda" organisations abroad were founded by his disciples; they are distinct bodies.
  • Parmarth Niketan. On the east bank, in Swarg Ashram. Uttarakhand Tourism says it was established in 1942 by Swami Sukhdevanand ji Maharaj. Its own site describes it as the largest ashram in Rishikesh, with several hundred rooms, daily yoga, meditation, satsang and a Ganga aarti at sunset; its President and spiritual head is Swami Chidanand Saraswati. It also hosts the International Yoga Festival in March.
  • Swarg Ashram. Uttarakhand Tourism describes it as "a cluster of ashrams on the eastern bank of the Ganga", most of which offer courses on yoga and spiritual studies.

The state tourism board writes that Rishikesh is "commonly referred to as the 'yoga capital of the world'". The phrase is everywhere on banners; what it means for you is a dense choice of places, from century-old institutions to rooms above a café. Choosing well is the real work, and the pages below are there for it.

The two banks, in two minutes

Think of Rishikesh as two banks joined by footbridges.

  • West bank: the old town and its market, Triveni Ghat (the main bathing ghat, where Uttarakhand Tourism describes the evening aarti "with the entire ghat lit with flickering lamps"), the bus stand and railway stations, then upstream Muni ki Reti with the Sivananda Ashram, and Tapovan.
  • East bank: Swarg Ashram, largely pedestrian, with Parmarth Niketan and many older ashrams, and the forest path towards the former ashram of Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, known as the Beatles Ashram.

Bridges close for repairs and new ones open slowly: ask your host which crossings are open on the day you arrive, rather than trusting an old map.

The Ganga aarti

Every evening at dusk, lamps are offered to the river. Parmarth Niketan's aarti begins at sunset; its site says times vary with the season and asks visitors to check with reception, with a fire ritual about half an hour before. At the Sivananda Ashram, the Divine Life Society's published programme gives the Ganga arati and puja at 5:30-6:00 pm in winter and 6:00-6:30 pm in summer. Triveni Ghat holds the town's pilgrim aarti. Our Ganga aarti page explains what happens and how to take part with respect.

Seasons in one paragraph

The nearest official weather records come from the India Meteorological Department station at Dehradun, about 45 km away. Over 1971-2010, January was the coldest month (mean minimum 6 °C), May the hottest (mean maximum 34.9 °C), and July and August the wettest, with about 660 and 700 mm of rain. For yoga, most visitors aim for October-November and February-April, with the International Yoga Festival in March. The month-by-month page gives the full table and the festival dates.

Getting there and the visa

Most international travellers land in Delhi. From there, the usual routes are a train to Haridwar or to one of Rishikesh's two stations, a bus from Delhi's Kashmiri Gate terminal, a taxi, or a domestic flight to Jolly Grant airport, which Uttarakhand Tourism places 21 km from Rishikesh. Details and pitfalls are on how to reach Rishikesh.

For the paperwork, read our page on the India e-Visa for a yoga trip: the official site lists "attending a short term yoga programme" among the purposes of the e-Tourist Visa, and the application must be made at least four days before arrival.

Choosing a course or an ashram stay

Before paying anyone, ask: who will actually teach you, what a day looks like hour by hour, the house rules, what is included, and the refund policy in writing. An ashram is a community with rules, not a hotel with yoga; Parmarth Niketan, for example, publishes a dress code, a ban on alcohol, smoking and non-vegetarian food, and silence from 10 pm to 6 am. Our page on ashrams in Rishikesh lists what the institutions publish themselves.

If you are going for a teacher training, read what Yoga Alliance registration does and does not cover, what goes into a 200-hour yoga teacher training, and how to compare teacher trainings in Rishikesh. For your budget, our cost page keeps to dated, official prices and gives you a method for the rest.

Haridwar, next door

Downstream, where the Ganga enters the plains, Haridwar is a city of pilgrims with the great evening aarti at Har ki Pauri. It will host the Ardh Kumbh Mela from 14 January to 20 April 2027, according to dates announced by the Mela administration and reported by PTI: expect heavy crowds in both towns on the main bathing days.

Questions people ask

Why is Rishikesh called the yoga capital of the world?

The phrase is used by Uttarakhand's own tourism board. It reflects a century of ashrams on both banks of the Ganga, Swami Sivananda's Divine Life Society founded in 1936, and the International Yoga Festival held every March, according to the encyclopedic entry since 1999.

Which bank of the Ganga should I stay on?

The west bank has the old town, Triveni Ghat, the stations and Muni ki Reti with the Sivananda Ashram. The east bank holds Swarg Ashram, a cluster of ashrams that includes Parmarth Niketan. Choose by what you will do every day, not by the name.

Do I need a special visa to study yoga in Rishikesh?

The official e-Tourist Visa lists attending a short term yoga programme among its purposes. For a structured course that issues a certificate, the wording is less clear: ask the Indian embassy or consulate of your country before booking.

When is the quietest time to go?

The monsoon, from June to September in the India Meteorological Department's seasons, is quiet and green but very wet, with landslide risk on mountain roads. October to April is the main season for yoga visitors.
