Haridwar, the gate of the Ganga
Updated October 16, 2026 · sources checked October 16, 2026
In short
Haridwar is the holy city where the Ganga leaves the Himalayan foothills for the plains, a short road trip downstream from Rishikesh. Its main ghat, Har Ki Pauri, hosts a Ganga aarti at dusk every day. In 2027 it holds the Ardh Kumbh Mela, with ten bathing dates from 14 January to 20 April. Most yoga travellers visit it as a day trip.
Why come here for yoga
Haridwar (हरिद्वार, haridvāra, "the gate of Hari", that is Viṣṇu) is not a yoga town in the sense Rishikesh is. It is something older: one of the seven holy cities of Hinduism, the sapta purī listed with Ayodhya, Mathura, Varanasi, Kanchi, Ujjain and Dwarka, and one of the four places where the Kumbh Mela is held (Wikipedia, Haridwar). Here the Ganga comes out of the mountains and touches the plains. For a practitioner staying in Rishikesh, a day in Haridwar shows the river as most Indians live it: as a goddess to whom families bring their prayers, their vows and the ashes of their dead.
Uttarakhand Tourism also lists ashrams where visitors can stay, learn yoga and meditation or follow a simple life: Shantikunj, Ma Anandamayi Ashram, Sapt Rishi Ashram, Harihar Ashram, Bharat Sevashram Sangh and Vyas Ashram. The Sapt Rishi Ashram, near the bank of the Ganga, was established in 1943 and runs a Sanskrit school (Uttarakhand Tourism; Wikipedia). The same official page describes Patanjali Yogpeeth as an institute with a large campus that conducts research in yoga and Ayurveda. We report these listings; we recommend none of them.
Sacred places
- Har Ki Pauri (हर की पौड़ी), "the steps of Hara", that is Śiva; Uttarakhand Tourism translates it "the footsteps of gods". It is the city's most famous ghat, and the district's official page says it was built by King Vikramaditya. Every evening at dusk, the Ganga aarti is offered there with towering lamps, temple bells, conch shells, chanting priests, and hundreds of small lamps and flowers floating on the river (Uttarakhand Tourism). It is more intense, more crowded and more family-centred than the aartis of Rishikesh.
- Mansa Devi, on Bilwa Parvat: reached by a path of about 3 km or by the ropeway known as Mansa Devi Udankhatola. With Chandi Devi on Neel Parvat and Maya Devi in town, it completes what the tourism department calls the Siddhapeeth triangle.
- Daksha Mahadev, in Kankhal, on the outskirts, built where King Daksha is said to have performed his sacrifice; very crowded during Shravan (July–August).
- The other ghats: Vishnu Ghat, Ganesh Ghat, Birla Ghat, Gau Ghat.
Kumbh in 2027
On 14 April 2026, the Mela Officer announced ten major bathing dates for the Ardh Kumbh Mela in 2027: 14 January (Makar Sankranti); 6, 11 and 20 February; 6 March (Mahashivratri) and 8 March; 7, 14, 15 and 20 April (PTI via The Week, 15 April 2026). The three amrit snān are on 6 March, 8 March and 14 April. On and around these dates, expect huge crowds, traffic diversions and full rooms, in Haridwar and in Rishikesh. Check the official mela administration for final arrangements before you travel.
When to go
Haridwar shares the climate of Rishikesh, a little hotter. Figures quoted in the encyclopedic entry give summer temperatures of 25 to 44 °C and winter ones from about freezing to 24 °C. The water is clear and cold most of the year, but in the monsoon it carries soil from the mountains (Wikipedia, Haridwar); the UK government notes that the monsoon in India usually runs from June to November. The most comfortable months are October to April, provided you avoid the Kumbh bathing dates if you dislike crowds, or choose them on purpose if you want to see them.
Getting there
- From Rishikesh: buses, shared vehicles and taxis run along the river road; most travellers go for the afternoon and come back after the aarti.
- From Delhi: buses leave from ISBT Kashmiri Gate; Haridwar railway station has direct trains to Delhi and many other cities (Uttarakhand Tourism; IRCTC for bookings).
- By air: Jolly Grant airport in Dehradun is about 37 km away according to Uttarakhand Tourism, with daily flights to Delhi.
Check the official e-Visa rules before booking a programme in an ashram.
Budget
There is no ticket for the aarti: it is a public rite. You will be asked for donations on the ghats; giving is your choice, and an official receipt is a good sign. Rooms and taxi prices rise sharply on bathing days: get the fare agreed before you leave.
Etiquette
- Remove your shoes on the steps of Har Ki Pauri and keep to the flow of the crowd during the aarti.
- Dress modestly; women and men alike cover shoulders and knees.
- Ask before photographing people bathing or performing rites for their dead.
- Haridwar is vegetarian: the public sale of meat, fish and eggs is banned within the municipal limits of Haridwar, Rishikesh and Muni ki Reti, a ban the Supreme Court upheld on 9 March 2004 (Om Prakash v. State of U.P.). Do not bring meat, eggs or alcohol near temples or into ashrams.
Health and safety
- The Ganga at Har Ki Pauri is fast. The UK government warns that "there are strong currents in rivers" and that people drown every year in India: if you bathe, stay on the lowest step within reach of the edge, never go in after dark, and do not let anyone pull you into deeper water (FCDO).
- In dense crowds, keep your phone and money close; the FCDO notes that stampedes have occurred at large religious gatherings.
- Emergency number: 112.
Choosing a retreat or a training here
Haridwar's ashrams are mostly places of devotion, service and pilgrimage, not yoga schools for foreigners. Before staying in one, ask: is there a published daily schedule? Are foreign guests registered (Form C) by the ashram? What does the stay cost, in writing? Is there a teacher who speaks your language? If you are looking for a teacher training, compare what you are offered with what Yoga Alliance does and does not certify, and read our page on the 200-hour teacher training. Most practitioners base themselves in Rishikesh and come to Haridwar for the river.
