Goa for yogis, an honest look
Updated October 16, 2026 · sources checked October 16, 2026
In short
Goa is not a historic centre of yoga like Rishikesh, Mysore or Varanasi. Teacher trainings and retreats gather there in the dry months, roughly October to May, because of the beaches, the climate and the tourist season, not because of a lineage. It suits a course by the sea. For yoga's roots, combine it with a stay elsewhere in India.
Why come here for yoga
Let us be straightforward: Goa is not a high place of yoga history. No major lineage and no historic institution comparable to Krishnamacharya's school in Mysore, the Iyengar institute in Pune or the ashrams of Rishikesh is associated with Goa. Goa's long history is that of its Hindu temples and of four and a half centuries as a Portuguese colony, visible in Old Goa's churches.
Why, then, does a search for "yoga teacher training" bring up so many courses in Goa? The answer is climate and season. Goa has three seasons: the southwest monsoon from June to September, which brings more than 90 % of the year's rain, a post-monsoon period from October to January and a pre-monsoon period from February to May, with May the hottest month (Wikipedia, Goa). The Goa Tourism Development Corporation describes winter as the moment that "opens the doors to Goa's season": shutters go up, beach beds are laid out, and the peak-season rush begins. Retreats and trainings follow the same calendar as the beach economy. For many travellers, that makes Goa a place to learn by the sea, in a warm dry winter, with easy flights.
That is a legitimate reason to come. It simply is not the same reason as going to Rishikesh or Mysore, and a school that sells Goa as "the birthplace of yoga" is telling you something false.
Sacred places
- Old Goa's churches and convents, a UNESCO World Heritage property about 10 km east of the capital Panjim. UNESCO describes seven monuments that spread Manueline, Mannerist and Baroque forms in Asia from the sixteenth to the eighteenth centuries; the Basilica of Bom Jesus keeps the tomb of Saint Francis Xavier.
- Shri Manguesh temple, a Hindu temple dedicated to Śiva at Mangueshi, in Priol (Ponda taluka), whose festivals include the annual jatra of the month of Māgha (around January–February), Navarātri and Mahāśivarātri (Wikipedia, Mangueshi Temple). The temples of Ponda are a quiet inland counterpoint to the beaches.
- The sea at dawn: not a temple, but the reason most practitioners come. Practise on the sand early, before the heat and the crowds.
When to go
- October to January: the post-monsoon months and the start of the season; trainings and retreats open.
- February to May: drier and increasingly hot, with May the hottest month, often above 35 °C with high humidity (Wikipedia, Goa).
- June to September: the monsoon. Rain, a rough sea and many seasonal businesses closed; a different, green Goa, but not the time for a beach course.
Getting there
- By air: Goa has two international airports, Goa International Airport at Dabolim (a civil enclave on a naval airfield) and Manohar International Airport at Mopa, which began international operations in March 2023 (Wikipedia, Goa). The FCDO notes that some places in India, Goa among them, have two airports a considerable distance apart: check which one serves your school.
- By train: two lines, the Konkan Railway along the coast and a South Western Railway line from Vasco da Gama inland.
- By road: NH-66 runs along the west coast to Mumbai in the north and Mangalore in the south.
Read our page on the India e-Visa before booking a teacher training: the official text excludes structured courses that issue a qualifying certificate from the e-Tourist Visa.
Budget
We found no official price relevant to a yoga stay that we could date. December is the peak of the season, and Goa Tourism itself advises booking in advance to stay ahead of the crowds. Ask every school for a written, itemised quote (tuition, room, meals, materials, certificate fee) and compare at least two.
Etiquette
- Swimwear is for the beach: cover up in villages, markets, churches and temples.
- Remove your shoes in temples; follow the photography rules posted in churches.
- Respect the fishermen's beaches and boats; ask before photographing people.
Health and safety
- The sea: France Diplomatie warns of powerful offshore currents in Goa during the monsoon and calls Miramar beach at Panjim particularly dangerous; the FCDO adds that most beaches have no warning signs, flags or lifesaving equipment and that people drown every year.
- Drinks: France Diplomatie warns that foreign women in Goa have been offered drinks in night bars containing a substance that causes loss of consciousness; the FCDO reports spiked drinks and food across India. Never leave your glass.
- Drugs: the FCDO warns that possession of any illegal drug can lead to a minimum sentence of six months, up to ten years, with slow judicial processes.
- Scams: France Diplomatie names Goa among the places where some vendors offer to ship valuables abroad and then make fraudulent card charges.
- Mosquitoes: France Diplomatie lists Goa among the regions where chikungunya is present.
- Emergency number: 112.
Choosing a retreat or a training here
Because the place carries no lineage, the school must carry it. Ask:
- Who are the lead teachers, where and with whom did they train, and are they present for the whole course?
- How many contact hours, how much philosophy and anatomy, how much self-practice?
- What certificate, and recognised by whom? Read what Yoga Alliance does and does not certify and our page on the 200-hour teacher training.
- Where do you sleep, and what happens if the course is cancelled or you leave early?
Red flags: "certified in 7 days", invented lineages, reviews you cannot trace, full payment demanded in cash, or a course that spends more time on parties than on practice.
Questions people ask
Is Goa a good place for a 200-hour teacher training?
It depends on the school, not the place. Goa has no historic yoga institution: judge each course on who teaches, the contact hours, the lineage and what the certificate really covers.
Can I swim in the sea in Goa?
France Diplomatie warns of strong offshore currents in Goa during the monsoon and advises against swimming in the dangerous zones; it names Miramar beach at Panjim as particularly dangerous. Outside the monsoon, swim only where lifeguards are present.
Which airport should I fly into?
Goa has two international airports: Goa International Airport at Dabolim and Manohar International Airport at Mopa, which began international operations in March 2023. They are far apart, so check which one is nearer your school before booking.
Is Goa safe for women travelling alone?
France Diplomatie specifically warns that drinks offered in night bars in Goa may be drugged; the FCDO advises avoiding isolated areas, including beaches, when alone at any time of day. Watch your glass, and keep to busy, lit places at night.
