The 200-hour yoga teacher training, read closely

In short
A 200-hour yoga teacher training is the foundational course for teaching general classes. Under Yoga Alliance's current standard it covers four areas: techniques and practice, anatomy, yoga humanities and professional essentials, with 150 hours taught by senior Lead Trainers and an assessment at the end. It can be intensive, spread over months, or partly online.
"200 hours" is a quantity of instruction, not a level of mastery. It became the common format because Yoga Alliance, the best-known private registry, built its foundational school credential around it. Here is what those hours contain under the standard in force, read on 17 October 2026, and how to judge a programme before you pay.
The curriculum, hour by hour
The current RYS 200 standard, in force for new schools since 27 February 2020, divides the course into four educational categories and twelve competencies.
| Category | Hours listed | You should see on the timetable |
|---|---|---|
| Techniques, Training and Practice | 75 | Guided asana with alignment and contraindications, sukhāsana and śavāsana among the required poses; meditation methods of the lineage; chanting, mantra, mudrā; prāṇāyāma such as ujjāyī, nāḍī śodhana, kapālabhāti; kośas, kleśas, cakras, nāḍīs, prāṇa vāyus |
| Anatomy and Physiology | 30 | Bones, joints, muscles, types of contraction; nervous system and stress response; breathing muscles; biomechanics and safe movement |
| Yoga Humanities | 30 | History of the word yoga, Vedas, Vedānta, haṭha, colonial and modern periods, the school's lineage; Yoga Sūtra, Bhagavad Gītā, Upaniṣads, Haṭha Yoga Pradīpikā; yogic ethics and Yoga Alliance's Ethical Commitment |
| Professional Essentials | 50 | Sequencing, pace, cueing, class management; scope of practice, insurance, waivers, invoicing; practice teaching with mentorship and feedback |
The four figures total 185 hours; the school spreads the remaining 15 according to its emphasis. All 200 hours must relate directly to these categories. If a programme lists long excursions, fire ceremonies or free time as "hours", ask how they fit.
Three rules from the same document are worth checking against any brochure:
- Who teaches. 150 of the 200 hours must be taught by Lead Trainers holding the E-RYT 500 credential, up to five of them.
- Assessment. Schools "should not graduate students simply because they have completed the teacher training".
- Lineage. The programme must offer "a consistent approach" in one lineage, style or method, "rather than a survey of different approaches".
Intensive, spread out, online
| Intensive | Spread over months | Online or hybrid | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rhythm | Full days, often residential | Weekends or evenings | Recorded lessons plus live sessions |
| Time to absorb | Little | A lot | Depends on you |
| Body load | High: several hours of practice every day | Gradual | Gradual, but less correction in the room |
| What to check | Rest days, group size, sick policy | Attendance rules, total duration | Live hours, how practice teaching is supervised |
Yoga Alliance limits instruction to 14 hours a day, so 200 hours need at least 15 days of teaching. At a more usual 7 to 8 hours a day, an intensive runs about four weeks. A course announcing 200 hours in two weeks is either counting things that are not instruction or breaking that rule.
Online formats are allowed: at least 30 of the 200 hours must be live. Details on our online teacher training page.
What it really costs
We do not print "typical prices": they move with country, season, format and exchange rate, and no official survey of them exists that we could cite. What we can give you is the full list of what to budget, and the fees that are published.
| Item | Published amount or question to ask |
|---|---|
| Tuition | What exactly is included: manual, exams, certificate? |
| Accommodation and meals | Included? Single or shared? How many meals? |
| Travel and visa | Flights, transfers; for India see the e-Visa page |
| Insurance | Travel and medical during the course, then professional liability before teaching |
| Lost income | Weeks off work for an intensive |
| Yoga Alliance registration, if you want it | 50 dollars once + 65 dollars a year, 115 the first year (application guide, read 17 October 2026) |
| Continuing education | 75 hours every three years to stay registered |
Good to know
To compare two prices, divide the tuition by the hours taught live by Lead Trainers. A cheap course made of recordings and assistants is not the same product as an in-person course taught by senior teachers.
Red flags
None of these alone condemns a school. Several together should stop you.
- Pressure: "last two places" every month, a countdown, a discount that expires tonight.
- No written terms before payment, or payment to a personal account without an invoice.
- "Internationally recognised certification" without saying who recognises it and where you can check.
- Therapy promises. Yoga Alliance's own policy says its standards "do not credential yoga therapy techniques".
- Famous names who do not teach: the website lists a senior teacher, but nobody can tell you how many of your hours they will give.
- Hands-on adjustments without consent, or a culture that mocks those who say no.
- Too many hours, too few days: more than 14 hours of instruction a day.
- No assessment: everyone graduates, whatever happens.
The questions to send every school

Arrive prepared
Most schools expect a regular practice before you arrive. If you want to prepare with method, our online course Prepare for Your 200-Hour Teacher Training: 8 Weeks gives forty lessons over eight weeks: choosing your school with a comparison grid, a daily practice that grows to 45 then 75 minutes, the Sanskrit and the texts you will meet, a first experience of guiding, and the practical side of training in India. It is a preparation, not a teacher training: its certificate of completion counts for no training hours and is not recognised by Yoga Alliance or any other body.
Go further
Choosing Your 200-Hour Yoga Teacher Training is the book behind this page: the standard competency by competency, how to verify a school and its Lead Trainers, 27 questions, the warning signs, the frameworks outside Yoga Alliance, a budget worksheet and a comparison grid for three schools.
Questions people ask
What is a 200-hour yoga teacher training?
A course of 200 hours of instruction that prepares you to teach safe, well-structured general classes. The figure comes from Yoga Alliance's foundational school credential, the RYS 200; graduates of a registered school can apply for the RYT 200.
How long does a 200-hour yoga teacher training take?
It depends on the format. Yoga Alliance caps instruction at 14 hours a day, so 200 hours cannot fit in fewer than 15 days of teaching. At 7 to 8 hours a day an intensive takes about four weeks; spread-out courses run over several months of weekends.
How much is a 200-hour yoga teacher training?
Prices vary too much between countries, formats and schools for an honest average, and we found no official survey of them. Budget the whole: tuition, accommodation, meals, travel, visa, insurance, lost income, then Yoga Alliance registration if you want it (115 dollars the first year).
What does yoga teacher training involve day to day?
Practice of asana, prāṇāyāma and meditation, lectures in anatomy and philosophy, teaching methodology, then supervised practice teaching with feedback. A residential intensive usually starts early and runs into the evening; ask for the hour-by-hour timetable.
Can you fail a 200-hour yoga teacher training?
You should be able to. Yoga Alliance's standard says registered schools should assess trainees and should not graduate students simply because they completed the course. Ask each school how it assesses you.
