Bodh Gaya, where the Buddha sat

Updated October 16, 2026 · sources checked October 16, 2026

In short

Bodh Gaya, in Bihar, is the place where the Buddha is said to have attained enlightenment under the Bodhi tree. Its Mahabodhi Temple is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, open every day from 5 am to 9 pm, without phones or cameras inside. Meditators also come for 10-day Vipassana courses at Dhamma Bodhi, run on donations. Go between September and April.

Why come here for yoga

The yoga traditions of India and the Buddha's path grew up side by side, and they share a word: dhyāna, meditation. Bodh Gaya is where that word took one of its most decisive forms. According to the Bodhgaya Temple Management Committee, the prince Siddhartha, after six years of austerities, accepted rice pudding from Sujata on the bank of the Niranjana river, sat on a seat of kusa grass beneath a peepal tree facing east, and on the full moon of Vaiśākha attained enlightenment. The seat is called the Vajrāsana, the diamond throne; the tree, the Bodhi tree.

A yogi does not come here for posture classes. You come to sit: at dawn near the Bodhi tree, in a 10-day silent course, or simply for an evening of chanting in many languages. If your practice has slowly moved from āsana towards meditation, this is a place that makes sense of that movement.

Vipassana at Dhamma Bodhi

The best-known meditation course in town is run at Dhamma Bodhi, the BodhGaya International Vipassana Meditation Centre, listed on dhamma.org, the network of courses in the tradition of S.N. Goenka. According to its page, the centre stands on 18 acres in the countryside of south Bihar and can house about 120 men and 80 women in single and double rooms with attached bathrooms. What it publishes:

  • 10-day courses, beginning after a 2–4 pm registration and orientation, and ending on the morning of the eleventh day.
  • Donations only: all courses are run solely on a donation basis, met by those who have completed a course.
  • Instructions in Hindi and English.
  • An application for every course: acknowledgment by email, and up to two weeks before notification.
  • On 16 October 2026, the schedule listed 10-day courses in November and December 2026 and January 2027, many of them marked "construction work in progress": read the notice on the page before applying.

The code of discipline is the same everywhere: Noble Silence until the morning of the last full day, phones and smartwatches deposited for the whole course, no leaving the course boundaries, and a day that begins with a 4 am bell. It is serious practice, not a retreat holiday.

Sacred places

  • The Mahabodhi Temple. Bihar Tourism describes it as a UNESCO World Heritage Site marking the place where the Buddha is said to have attained enlightenment, a tower about 170 ft high, standing east of the Bodhi tree. The temple committee traces the site to King Asoka in the 3rd century BC and quotes the Chinese pilgrim Xuanzang (Huen Tsang), who described it in 637 AD.
  • A restored temple. The committee records a major restoration begun in 1874 by envoys of the Burmese king Mindon Min, completed in 1884 under Sir Alexander Cunningham. Since the Bodhgaya Temple Act of 1949, the temple is run by a management committee; the handover from the Mahant took place on 23 May 1953.
  • The daily timetable (temple committee): main shrine opens at 5 am; sutta chanting and meditation 5.30–6 am; kheer offering at 10 am; Mahayana chanting 6–6.30 pm and Pali chanting 6.30–7 pm; closing at 9 pm.

When to go

Bihar Tourism gives September to April as the best time to visit. The monsoon brings floods to Bihar: in October 2026, France's official travel advice still carried a notice about floods in Bihar after heavy rain in mid-September.

Getting there

  • By air: Gaya Airport is about 7 km from Bodh Gaya (Wikipedia).
  • By train: Bihar Tourism gives Gaya Ji Junction as the nearest railway station, about 15 km away on its Gaya Ji page, and about 2 hours by train from Patna to Gaya Ji. Gaya lies about 100 km south of Patna.
  • On site: auto-rickshaws and cycle-rickshaws within Bodh Gaya.

Combine it with Varanasi, where the Buddha gave his first sermon at Sarnath, and with Munger and the Bihar School of Yoga. Before booking, read our page on the India e-Visa.

Budget

We publish only official, dated prices. Vipassana courses at Dhamma Bodhi charge nothing; they run on donations from former students (dhamma.org, read 16 October 2026). The temple committee writes that the temple depends on donations; we found no entry ticket published on its site, so check at the gate. Rooms in town vary widely with the pilgrim season: ask for the price in writing before you arrive.

Etiquette

Bihar Tourism's own guidance for the Mahabodhi Temple: dress modestly, remove footwear before entering, maintain silence, respect the sanctity of the site, avoid photography where prohibited and leave mobiles, cameras and electronic gadgets outside. Add a few things every pilgrim notices:

  • Walk around the temple at the pace of those around you; do not cut through groups of monks chanting.
  • Sit where others sit; do not climb on railings or stupas for a photograph.
  • If you join an evening chant, stay to the end.

Health and safety

  • Alcohol is illegal in Bihar: the UK government warns of arrest and prison sentences of 5 to 10 years for consuming, producing or transporting it.
  • Emergencies: dial 112 (FCDO).
  • Be wary of food or drinks offered by strangers, as spiked drinks have been reported in India (FCDO).
  • The FCDO notes Naxalite groups active in some eastern states: keep to main roads and travel by day.

Choosing a retreat or a training here

Many groups offer "meditation retreats" in Bodh Gaya alongside the monasteries' own programmes. Before paying anyone:

  • Who teaches, in which lineage, and how can you check it on the lineage's own website?
  • Is the course free, on donation, or paid? Dhamma.org courses never charge a fee: anyone asking a fee for a "Goenka Vipassana" course in Bodh Gaya is not the official centre.
  • How long, how much silence, and what happens if you need to leave?
  • If you also want a yoga qualification, compare with what Yoga Alliance certifies and read our page on the 200-hour teacher training.

Red flag: an "enlightenment" package with a fixed price and a certificate. The Buddha's seat costs nothing to sit near.

Questions people ask

What are the Mahabodhi Temple's opening hours?

According to the Bodhgaya Temple Management Committee, the temple is open every day: the main shrine opens at 5 am, with sutta chanting and meditation from 5.30 to 6 am, evening chanting from 6 to 7 pm, and closing at 9 pm (read on 16 October 2026).

Can I take my phone into the temple?

Bihar Tourism's official page for the Mahabodhi Temple states: mobile, camera and electronic gadgets prohibited. Leave them at your hotel.

How do I join a Vipassana course in Bodh Gaya?

Courses at Dhamma Bodhi are listed on dhamma.org. An application is required; acknowledgment comes by email and confirmation can take up to two weeks. Courses run on donations only, and instructions are given in Hindi and English. In October 2026, several dates were marked construction work in progress.

Is Bodh Gaya a yoga destination?

Not in the sense of posture classes. It is a place of Buddhist practice: sitting, chanting, walking around the temple. For a yogi it is the source of the meditation tradition, and a natural stop between Varanasi and Munger.
