Coimbatore and the Isha Yoga Center
Updated October 16, 2026 · sources checked October 16, 2026
In short
Coimbatore, in western Tamil Nadu, is the gateway to the Isha Yoga Center founded by Sadhguru, about 30 km west of the city at the foot of the Velliangiri mountains. Its 112-foot Adiyogi bust and the Dhyanalinga meditation space are open from 6 am to 8 pm. Overseas visitors register online before staying. The mild season runs from November to March.
Why come here for yoga
Coimbatore itself is a textile and industrial city, which Tamil Nadu Tourism calls the "Manchester of South India". Yoga travellers come for what lies west of it: the Isha Yoga Center, at the foot of the Velliangiri mountains, about 30 km from the city. It is the headquarters of the Isha Foundation, which describes itself as a not-for-profit, volunteer-run organisation founded by Sadhguru, and it presents the center as offering the four paths of yoga: kriya, gnana, karma and bhakti.
This page describes what Isha publishes about itself, nothing more. Isha has its own teaching, its own programmes and its own vocabulary; we neither recommend nor rank it. If you come, come knowing what you are visiting: a large spiritual campus with its own rules, not a neutral yoga resort.
What is on the campus
- The Dhyanalinga. Isha's site describes it as a meditative space that "does not subscribe to any particular belief or faith", consecrated by Sadhguru after three years of prāṇa-pratiṣṭhā; its consecration day is 24 June, and 2026 marked its 27th anniversary. A bell every 15 minutes marks when visitors may enter and leave, and you are asked to stay at least 15 minutes. A nāda ārādhana (sound offering) is held from 11.50 am to 12.10 pm and 5.50 to 6.10 pm.
- Adiyogi. A 112-foot face of Shiva as the first yogi, unveiled by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the night of Maha Shivaratri, 24 February 2017. Isha says Guinness World Records recognised it as the world's largest bust sculpture, and that the 112 feet represent the 112 ways Adiyogi offered to attain wellbeing. Beside it stands the Yogeshwara Linga, consecrated by Sadhguru. A light show, Adiyogi Divya Darshanam, runs every day at 7 pm, cancelled in case of rain.
- Linga Bhairavi, a temple to the goddess, and the Suryakund (for men) and Chandrakund (for women), consecrated water bodies.
Sacred places
- The Velliangiri mountains, which rise behind the center. Isha's visitor guide is explicit: entry into the adjacent forest is not permitted under government regulations, and trekking the Velliangiri mountains (including up to the seventh hill) is strictly prohibited except for participants in its Shivanga Sadhana yatra. Respect it: you are next to a reserve forest.
- Maha Shivaratri at Adiyogi. Isha's page announces the next celebration for 6 March 2027, an all-night event from 6 pm to 6 am IST, also streamed live for free.
When to go
Tamil Nadu Tourism describes Coimbatore's climate as hot and semi-arid, mild from November to March, its best time to visit. Isha's visitor guide adds the local picture at the foothills: warm from April to September, up to about 35 °C; cool from October to February, with nights down to about 15 °C; and regular rain from June to November, so carry light rain gear. For Tamil Nadu as a whole, the India Meteorological Department gives October to December, the northeast monsoon, as the chief rainy season.
Getting there
- By air: Coimbatore International Airport at Peelamedu, about 15 km from the city centre (Tamil Nadu Tourism). From the airport, Isha says prepaid taxis to the center take about 1.5 hours.
- By train: Coimbatore Junction, Coimbatore North and Podanur stations; Isha gives about 1 hour by taxi from the railway station.
- By bus: direct buses run between Coimbatore and the center (timetable on Isha's site).
- At night: Isha asks visitors not to travel to or from the center between 10 pm and 6 am, because of wildlife on the road near the reserve forest.
Overseas visitors (non-Indian passport holders and NRIs) are asked to register and create a visit request online before coming, with a recent photo, passport and visa ready. Isha's guide states that check-in requires a physical passport and visa or OCI card, with no exceptions. Before you fly, read our page on the India e-Visa.
Budget
We publish only official, dated prices, and we found none for visiting the consecrated spaces on Isha's site; the Dhyanalinga page mentions only voluntary offerings. Cottages are booked through Isha's own booking site; its visitor guide says cottage pricing is published there. Isha's guide says only Indian rupees are accepted on campus and that no currency exchange is available there: change money before you arrive.
Etiquette
From Isha's visitor guide:
- Dress: clothing that covers shoulders, midriff and knees for men and women; ankle-length trousers, no shorts or capris; avoid tight clothing.
- Photography only near the Dhyanalinga entrance and near Adiyogi.
- Zero tolerance: cigarettes, alcohol, illicit drugs and meat products are prohibited on campus at all times.
- Meals are eaten in silence; do not feed animals or pick flowers or leaves.
- Greet with "Namaskaram", palms joined, and avoid public displays of affection.
Health and safety
- Wildlife: do not walk in the surrounding forests and villages, and do not travel at night (Isha).
- Emergencies: dial 112 (FCDO).
- Food and drink: be wary of food or drinks offered by strangers; spiked drinks have been reported in India (FCDO).
- In the rainy months, check the road and weather before setting off.
Choosing a retreat or a training here
The Isha Yoga Center runs its own programmes, and many outside businesses sell "Isha trips" or Shivaratri packages. Before paying anyone:
- Is the programme listed on Isha's official site, and is your booking made directly with Isha?
- What are the conditions of stay? Isha's guide sets a maximum visit length for volunteers and asks you not to make travel arrangements before your accommodation is confirmed.
- What do you get at the end, and is it a teaching qualification? Compare with what Yoga Alliance does and does not certify, and read our page on the 200-hour teacher training.
From Coimbatore, the other great sites of sacred Tamil Nadu lie to the east, towards the Bay of Bengal: Chennai, Pondicherry and Tiruvannamalai. Mysore, where Krishnamacharya taught at the palace from 1933, is in neighbouring Karnataka: see our Mysore page.
