Pondicherry and Auroville, the yoga of Sri Aurobindo

Updated October 16, 2026 · sources checked October 16, 2026

In short

Pondicherry (Puducherry) is home to the Sri Aurobindo Ashram, founded in 1926, where the samadhi of Sri Aurobindo and the Mother can be visited from 8 to 11.30 am and 2 to 6 pm. Nearby Auroville offers a free Matrimandir viewing point and, on online booking only, silent concentration in its Inner Chamber. Avoid the October–December monsoon if you can.

Why come here for yoga

Pondicherry is the only place in India where you can sit at the tomb of a modern master of yoga in the middle of a former French colonial town. The Sri Aurobindo Ashram was founded in 1926 and, according to its official site, grew under the guidance of the Mother from two dozen disciples into a community of almost 1,600 members, more than 2,000 people with the students of its Centre of Education and the devotees living nearby.

Integral yoga, in the ashram's own words

Do not expect posture classes. The ashram's FAQ describes Sri Aurobindo's yoga as a long and demanding inner discipline that combines the way of knowledge, the heart's way of devotion and surrender, and the way of works turned away from self-interest, aiming at a "greater spiritual and supramental Consciousness". It adds that outward asceticism is not essential, but mastery of desire and attachment is. Ashram members also practise physical education, including asanas, strength training and swimming.

The heart of the place is the Samadhi, a white marble shrine under a tree in the courtyard of the main building, where the bodies of Sri Aurobindo and the Mother are laid to rest. The ashram has been administered since 1955 by the Sri Aurobindo Ashram Trust, formed by the Mother.

Auroville

Just north of the town lies Auroville, the international township whose visitors' page states: "Auroville belongs to nobody in particular. Auroville belongs to humanity as a whole." At its centre stands the Matrimandir, which Auroville describes as "a place for individual silent concentration" and, in its own words, "not a tourist site".

Sacred places

  • The Samadhi, Sri Aurobindo Ashram: open to all from 8.00 to 11.30 am and 2.00 to 6.00 pm; after 6 pm, a visitor's pass is required. On Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday, a collective meditation is held around the Samadhi from 7.25 to 7.50 pm for those with a pass.
  • The Bureau Central, the ashram's information centre, with an exhibition on Sri Aurobindo and the Mother, a daily video (except Sundays) and the passes you need.
  • Darshan days. The ashram explains that Sri Aurobindo, after retiring from daily contact, saw his disciples only a few times a year. Its darshan page lists the special days, among them 21 February (the Mother's birthday), 24 April (her final arrival in Pondicherry), 15 August (Sri Aurobindo's birthday) and 24 November (Siddhi day). On these days rooms fill: the ashram advises booking well ahead.
  • The Matrimandir Viewing Point, Auroville: free passes at the Visitors Centre, after a short video, every day from 9.00 am; a shaded 10-minute walk, with a free electric shuttle for those who need it.
  • The Matrimandir Inner Chamber: morning concentration only, booked online (see the FAQ above). No photography inside the Matrimandir. Rain closes it and cancels that day's bookings; in 2026 it was also closed for annual maintenance from 18 May to 14 June.

When to go

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) is clear about this coast: for Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, the northeast monsoon from October to December is the chief rainy season, bringing 48 % of the annual rainfall, and it is also the main cyclone season of the Bay of Bengal. The normal onset date is 20 October; in 2025 it began on 16 October, and on 2 December 2025 the remnants of cyclone Ditwah caused torrential rain over north Tamil Nadu and Puducherry.

Auroville itself writes that its main guest season runs from December to March, when the climate is cool and pleasant, with a second, shorter season from July to September. Book early for either.

Getting there

From the ashram's FAQ:

  • By air: the nearest major airport is Chennai, about 160 km north. Pondicherry Airport (PNY) has daily flights to and from Bengaluru and Hyderabad.
  • By bus: express and local buses from Chennai's Koyambedu bus stand.
  • By train: services run from Chennai Egmore to Pondicherry.
  • By taxi: the ashram's car service, Sri Aurobindo Autocare, can be booked in advance from South Indian airports and stations; it also runs weekday tours to the ashram (8.15 am) and to the Auroville Visitors Centre and Matrimandir Viewing Point (1.30 pm).

Puducherry is not part of Tamil Nadu: according to its government, it is a Union Territory made of the former French establishments of Puducherry, Karaikal, Mahé and Yanam, transferred de facto to India on 1 November 1954 and officially integrated in 1963. Before you fly, read our page on the India e-Visa.

Budget

We publish only official, dated prices. On 16 October 2026, the Matrimandir Viewing Point was free (Auroville). The ashram's guest houses publish their contacts and working hours but no tariff on the main site: ask them directly. Hotels and guest houses fill up during darshan days and Auroville's high season.

Etiquette

  • At the Samadhi, sit in silence; the ashram calls it a place for pranam and meditation.
  • Keep to visiting hours and carry your pass in the evening.
  • Ashram guest houses have strict rules on cleanliness and conduct, and most close their gates at 10.30 pm.
  • At Auroville, collect your own Matrimandir pass, leave vehicles at the Visitors Centre parking and come in a "quiet, physical and mental state".

Health and safety

  • Cyclones: the FCDO lists the east coast of India from September to December among the areas most at risk. Follow local authorities' instructions during the monsoon.
  • The sea: France's official travel advice warns of strong offshore currents on the coasts of Tamil Nadu and Pondicherry during the monsoon.
  • Emergencies: dial 112 (FCDO).
  • Foreign visitors staying at the ashram must be registered with the Foreigners' Registration Office; only three ashram guest houses are authorised to do it for you.

Choosing a retreat or a training here

The ashram does not sell yoga teacher trainings, and Auroville is a township, not a school. Many private studios and retreats in the area use the names of Sri Aurobindo, the Mother or Auroville. Before paying:

Red flag: anyone selling Matrimandir access for a fee. Auroville says the passes are free and must be collected by visitors themselves. From Pondicherry, Tiruvannamalai is about 100 km to the west, and Chennai to the north.

Questions people ask

Can anyone visit the Sri Aurobindo Ashram?

Yes. According to the ashram, its main building, with the samadhi of Sri Aurobindo and the Mother, is open to all from 8.00 to 11.30 am and from 2.00 to 6.00 pm. After 6 pm you need a visitor's pass, issued by the Bureau Central or to guests of ashram guest houses.

How do I get inside the Matrimandir?

Auroville's Matrimandir site says Inner Chamber concentration is booked online only, by each person with their own email, between 7 am and noon IST, except on Tuesdays. Same-day bookings are not available; book 3 to 5 days ahead. Reporting time is 8.15 am, and only children aged 10 and over are admitted.

Is the Matrimandir viewing point free?

Yes. Auroville states that visits to the Matrimandir Viewing Point are free; passes are issued at the Visitors Centre after a short introductory video, every day from 9 am. Collect your pass yourself, not through a guide or driver.

Can I stay at the ashram?

The ashram runs a few guest houses for visitors to the ashram, not for tourists looking for cheap rooms. There is no phone, TV or Wi-Fi in rooms, most gates close at 10.30 pm, and only three of them are authorised to register foreign visitors with the authorities.
