Choosing a yoga teacher training in Rishikesh
4 min read · Updated October 17, 2026 · sources checked October 17, 2026
In short
To choose a 200-hour course in Rishikesh, pick your season first (October to April for most), then check each school in Yoga Alliance's directory, ask who teaches you and for how many hours, and get the visa question answered in writing. The e-Tourist Visa wording on short yoga programmes does not clearly cover a certificate course.
Walk from Tapovan to Swarg Ashram and you will pass many signs for 200-hour courses, several of them claiming to be the best. Yogide is written from Rishikesh and will not add a ranking to the noise. This page gives you the method instead: when to come, which kinds of places teach, what the official visa texts say, and what to check before you send a deposit. Every rule below was read on official sites on 17 October 2026.
Choose the season before the school
A 200-hour intensive means four weeks of practice from early morning, often in buildings without heating or air conditioning. The nearest official weather records, from the India Meteorological Department station at Dehradun (normals 1971-2010), give the frame:
| Period | What it means for a training |
|---|---|
| October-November | After the monsoon, mild days; a busy course season |
| December-January | January is the coldest month: cold mornings in unheated halls |
| February-April | Pleasant; the International Yoga Festival takes place in March |
| May-June | Maximum temperatures peak in May and June: long sessions get harder |
| July-September | July and August are the rainiest months; roads into the hills can close |
Our month-by-month page gives the figures in full.
The kinds of places that teach
- Ashrams with their own courses. Some long-established institutions run yoga courses inside a spiritual community, with its rules (silence hours, diet, dress, schedule). Some issue their own certificate and are not registered with Yoga Alliance. Our page on ashrams in Rishikesh lists what they publish about themselves.
- Private schools. Other courses are run by private schools. Some are registered with Yoga Alliance as an RYS 200, others are not: check each one, programme by programme.
- Government-linked certification. India's Yoga Certification Board, set up by the Ministry of Ayush, certifies yoga professionals by examination in categories such as Yoga Protocol Instructor or Yoga Wellness Instructor. Some schools prepare for it; ask which category and who conducts the exam.
None of these is better in itself. Decide first what you need the certificate for: a studio job abroad (often a 200-hour certificate, sometimes Yoga Alliance), teaching in India, or your own practice.
The visa question: what the official texts say
This is the point to settle in writing before you book flights. On the official e-Visa site, the e-Tourist Visa covers travellers whose sole objective includes "attending a short term yoga programme". In the eligibility section, the same item continues: "or short term courses on local languages, music, dance, arts & crafts, cooking, medicine etc. which should not be a formal or structured course/programme (courses not exceeding 6 months duration and not issuing a qualifying certificate/diploma etc. to the participants)".
A 200-hour training is structured and ends with a certificate. The text does not say whether the condition in brackets applies to yoga programmes as well. We cannot tell you that a teacher training is covered by the e-Tourist Visa, nor that it is not.
Two other routes exist on paper:
- The same site lists an e-Student Visa, valid one year, which asks for a "letter of admission from a recognised Indian educational institution with duration of the course".
- Some Indian missions describe the regular student visa as covering "the study of Yoga" at an officially recognised institution; the Embassy of India in Manila is one example.
What to do: ask the school which visa its foreign trainees use and whether it is a recognised institution for the student route; ask the Indian embassy or consulate in your country; keep both answers; never misstate the purpose of your visit. The general e-Visa rules (apply at least four days ahead, six months of passport validity) are on our India e-Visa page.
Registering your stay
The Bureau of Immigration's Form C portal states that "all accommodators, hotels & educational institutes are legally obliged" to file Form C (now Form III) for every foreign guest. A school that lodges foreign trainees should know this. If it shrugs, ask why.
The checks, in order
The detail of each question, and the red flags, are on our 200-hour training page; what the label covers is on Yoga Alliance explained.
What we will never do here
Name a "best school", publish a review we did not write from a verifiable fact, or take a commission from a school. If you would like help thinking through your plan, the form below reaches Clément directly in Rishikesh; he answers personally, with no partner to sell you.

Questions people ask
Can I do a 200-hour teacher training in Rishikesh on an e-Tourist Visa?
The official e-Visa site lists attending a short term yoga programme among e-Tourist purposes, but also says short courses should not be formal or structured nor issue a qualifying certificate. A 200-hour training issues one. Ask the Indian embassy or consulate in your country, in writing, before booking.
When is the best time for a teacher training in Rishikesh?
Most courses run from October to April. The India Meteorological Department's Dehradun records show January as the coldest month, July and August as the rainiest, and maximum temperatures peaking in May and June. Unheated rooms in winter and monsoon rain both weigh on a month of daily practice.
Are all yoga schools in Rishikesh registered with Yoga Alliance?
No. Some are, some are not, and some long-established ashrams have never registered. Check the exact school and programme in Yoga Alliance's public directory if you want the RYT 200 afterwards.
How long is a yoga teacher training in Rishikesh?
At 7 to 8 hours of teaching a day, a residential 200-hour intensive fills about four weeks. Yoga Alliance caps instruction at 14 hours a day, so a 200-hour course cannot honestly take less than 15 days of teaching.
