How to become a yoga teacher, step by step

3 min read · Updated October 17, 2026 · sources checked October 17, 2026

In short

To become a yoga teacher, build a regular practice with a teacher, complete a 200-hour teacher training, then register if your future employers ask for it (Yoga Alliance's RYT 200 is the best known), take out liability insurance, and start with small classes. Requirements depend on the country and the employer; there is no single worldwide licence.

There is no single world licence for yoga teachers. There is a well-trodden path, though, and a few facts that school brochures tend to blur. Here it is, step by step, with the sources read on 17 October 2026.

Step 1: practise long enough to know why

Traditionally a teacher is first a student who stayed. Patañjali puts the condition simply:

स तु दीर्घकालनैरन्तर्यसत्कारासेवितो दृढभूमिः

sa tu dīrgha-kāla-nairantarya-satkārāsevito dṛḍha-bhūmiḥ

And that practice becomes firmly grounded when it is cultivated for a long time, without interruption, and with care.

Yoga Sūtra 1.14 · our translation

In practice: attend classes with a teacher you trust, practise at home most days, read a little of the texts. Most trainings expect a regular practice before you arrive; ask each school what it expects. If your reason for teaching is still vague, write it down now. It will help you choose a course and get through the hard days.

Step 2: choose and complete a 200-hour training

The 200-hour course is the common entry level. Under Yoga Alliance's current standard it covers techniques and practice, anatomy, yoga humanities and professional essentials, with 150 hours taught by senior Lead Trainers and an assessment. Our page on the 200-hour yoga teacher training gives the curriculum, the red flags and the questions to ask; if you plan to train in India, read choosing a teacher training in Rishikesh too.

Step 3: register, if it serves you

Registration is optional and depends on where you will teach.

National certificationsVary by country (in France, for instance, certifications listed by France Compétences)Teaching in that country
Your school's certificate aloneProof that you completed its courseLineage-based teaching, your own community

Read what Yoga Alliance does and does not cover before you pay for anything because of its name. Registered teachers must log 75 hours of continuing education every three years (45 teaching, 30 training).

Step 4: protect yourself and your students

  • Liability insurance suited to the country and setting where you teach, before your first paid class. Check group, private, online and outdoor classes. Yoga Alliance lists discounted insurance among its member benefits; you still choose your own policy.
  • Scope of practice. Yoga Alliance's Scope of Practice prohibits members from advising or teaching in areas where they lack the appropriate credentials and competence, and its yoga therapy policy says its standards "do not credential yoga therapy techniques". When a student brings a medical problem, adapt, and refer them to a health professional.
  • Consent. The same Scope of Practice lists adjusting posture or practice only "with explicit and informed consent".
  • Your status. Teaching for pay usually means registering as self-employed or as a business where you live. Check with your country's official tax and business services; rules differ too much to sum up here.

Step 5: start small, keep learning

  1. Assist a senior teacher, or teach friends and community spaces.
  2. Teach what you practise: a simple, well-built class beats an ambitious one.
  3. Ask for feedback, and watch other teachers.
  4. Keep a teaching log (date, hours, number of students). It is the evidence Yoga Alliance asks for later: 100 teaching hours for the RYT 500, 1,000 for the E-RYT 200.
  5. Keep your own practice. The class you teach is only as deep as the one you do.

The step after the 200 hours is described on our 300-hour training page.

The money question, honestly

We found no official statistic for yoga teachers on their own. The US Bureau of Labor Statistics groups yoga instructors with fitness trainers and instructors: their median annual wage was 47,160 dollars in May 2025, and the Handbook notes that participation in yoga and Pilates is expected to keep increasing. It also notes that most fitness instructors are certified in their type of training, such as yoga. Many yoga teachers work part time or across several studios, so treat any single figure with caution, and make your own budget before leaving a job.

Before the training: prepare

Our online course Prepare for Your 200-Hour Teacher Training: 8 Weeks is forty lessons to arrive ready: choosing a school with method, a daily practice that grows to 75 minutes, Sanskrit and texts, a first experience of guiding. It is a preparation, not a teacher training, and its certificate of completion counts for no training hours.

Go further

Choosing Your 200-Hour Yoga Teacher Training gathers what you need before you pay: the standards, how to verify a school and its Lead Trainers, 27 questions, warning signs, India's YCB and the French framework, a budget worksheet, and a chapter on life after the training (registration, insurance, scope, first classes).

Questions people ask

Do yoga teachers need to be certified?

It depends on where you teach and who hires you. The US Bureau of Labor Statistics notes that most fitness instructors hold a certification for their type of training, such as yoga, and that requirements vary by facility. Many studios ask for a 200-hour certificate; Yoga Alliance registration is a private credential, not a state licence.

How many hours does it take to become a yoga teacher?

The usual entry level is 200 hours of training, the format of Yoga Alliance's RYT 200, which requires no teaching hours. The next steps are 300 more hours (RYT 500, with 100 hours of teaching) and, for the experienced credentials, 1,000 or 2,000 hours of teaching.

How long does it take to become a yoga instructor?

The training itself takes about four weeks as an intensive or several months part time. Most schools also expect a regular practice before you start, and confidence in teaching comes with classes taught afterwards; Yoga Alliance's E-RYT 200, for example, requires two years and 1,000 hours of teaching.

Can I become a yoga teacher at 40 or 50?

Yes. Yoga Alliance's teacher standards mention no age requirement, and a training does not depend on age. What matters is a steady practice, honest knowledge of your body's limits, and a training whose pace you can sustain; see a doctor first if you have a health condition.

How much do yoga teachers make?

We found no official statistic for yoga teachers alone. The US Bureau of Labor Statistics groups them with fitness trainers and instructors, whose median annual wage was 47,160 dollars in May 2025; many yoga teachers work part time or for several studios, so individual incomes vary widely.

Can you become a yoga teacher with no experience?

Not responsibly. A 200-hour training assumes you already practise; ask each school what it expects. Start with classes and a home practice for a good while, then train.
