How to reach Rishikesh from Delhi

3 min read · Updated October 16, 2026 · sources checked October 16, 2026

In short

From Delhi, you can reach Rishikesh by train to Haridwar or to Rishikesh's own stations, by bus from Delhi's Kashmiri Gate terminal, by taxi on the road through Haridwar, or by a domestic flight to Jolly Grant airport near Dehradun, 21 km from Rishikesh according to Uttarakhand Tourism. Book trains only on official Indian Railways channels and check timetables close to your date.

Most travellers reach Rishikesh through Delhi. There are four ways to cover the rest. Below, only what official or first-hand institutional sources state on 16 October 2026: we print no train timetable and no fare, because both change and we could not source them for your date.

The geography in one line

Rishikesh lies on the Ganga just upstream of Haridwar, where the river reaches the plains, and south-east of Dehradun, the state capital, which the encyclopedic entry places about 45 km away. The road from Delhi passes through Haridwar. Rishikesh sits on National Highway 58, the road that continues to Badrinath, according to Uttarakhand Tourism.

1. By train

Haridwar is the classic railhead. The Haridwar district administration says Haridwar station belongs to the Northern Railway zone and has "direct links to major cities of India like Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, Indore, Jaipur, Ahmedabad". Parmarth Niketan's own directions state that "there are several trains a day between Delhi and Haridwar" and point to the Indian Railways booking site. From Haridwar station, continue by bus, shared vehicle or taxi.

Rishikesh has two stations, according to the encyclopedic entry on the town:

  • Rishikesh, the original station;
  • Yog Nagari Rishikesh (code YNRK), opened in January 2021 and served by some long-distance trains (check which on the booking site). It is the starting point of the Rishikesh-Karnaprayag line, under construction towards the mountains.

Uttarakhand Tourism adds that from Rishikesh station, taxis and buses take you on to Muni ki Reti and Swargashram.

Practical points:

  • Book through official Indian Railways channels only, and check timetables close to your date; they change.
  • Compare a train to Haridwar with one to Yog Nagari Rishikesh: the second saves a road transfer, the first often gives more choice.
  • France Diplomatie notes that most thefts reported to the French embassy concern travellers on trains; keep documents and money on you, not in a bag on the luggage rack.

2. By bus

Uttarakhand Tourism states that "luxury and normal buses to Rishikesh are easily available from Delhi ISBT Kashmiri Gate and Meerut", and that buses and taxis connect Rishikesh with Dehradun, Haridwar, Srinagar (Garhwal), Tehri and Uttarkashi. Night buses let you arrive in the morning; daytime buses let you see the road. Travel time depends on traffic around Delhi and on pilgrim days.

3. By road, taxi or car

A private taxi from Delhi is the most flexible and the most expensive option. The encyclopedic entry gives about 240 km between Rishikesh and Delhi's international airport.

Arriving by car on the east bank (Swarg Ashram) is not always simple. Parmarth Niketan's own directions note that many taxi drivers avoid the mountain road to the ashram and instead stop at the Muni ki Reti parking area at Ram Jhula, from where you cross the Ganga by footbridge or motorboat and walk a few hundred metres. Ask your host where a car can drop you before you set off.

During the Kanwar pilgrimage (July-August) and on the great bathing days at Haridwar, including the Ardh Kumbh dates from January to April 2027, expect diversions and traffic restrictions on the Haridwar-Rishikesh road.

4. By air to Jolly Grant

Jolly Grant airport serves Dehradun. Uttarakhand Tourism places it 21 km from Rishikesh, says it is "well connected to Delhi with daily flights", and notes that taxis are easily available. The Dehradun district gives 20 km between the airport and Dehradun city centre, and the Haridwar district 37 km to Haridwar. A domestic flight from Delhi is the fastest route if you land in Delhi with luggage and little time; check the baggage allowance of your domestic ticket.

Arriving well

  • Monsoon: France Diplomatie warns that monsoon rains can cause landslides in mountain regions and advises checking road and rail links before any journey. Rishikesh itself is reachable, but trips beyond it can be cut.
  • Arrival time: Parmarth Niketan's office opens at 8 am and usually closes by 8 pm; its site asks late arrivals to contact the ashram in advance. Ask the same of any host.
  • Bridges: crossings between the banks close for works; ask which are open when you arrive.
  • Payments: Parmarth Niketan states it never asks for accommodation payments by phone or WhatsApp. Treat any such request, from any ashram's name, with suspicion.

Before you book, choose your season on when to visit Rishikesh, apply for the India e-Visa at least four days before arrival, and if you have a day to spare on the way, read about Haridwar. Back to the Rishikesh guide.
