What to wear for yoga, and what ashrams ask

The hatha texts are blunt: no costume makes a yogi. What you wear only has to let you breathe, bend and, in India, show respect.

In short

For yoga, wear light, comfortable clothes that let you breathe and bend and that stay in place when you turn upside down or fold forward: cotton is the traditional choice. Practise barefoot, keep a layer for the final relaxation, and in an Indian ashram cover your shoulders, midriff and legs, even during posture classes.

In the West, yoga has its own fashion industry. The texts of yoga have one sentence on the subject, and it is not encouraging for fashion:

न वेषधारणं सिद्धेः कारणं न च तत्कथा । क्रियैव कारणं सिद्धेः सत्यमेतन्न संशयः ॥

na veṣa-dhāraṇaṃ siddheḥ kāraṇaṃ na ca tat-kathā / kriyaiva kāraṇaṃ siddheḥ satyam etan na saṃśayaḥ

Wearing a particular dress is not the cause of success, nor is talking about it; practice alone is the cause of success. This is true, without doubt.

Hatha Yoga Pradipika 1.69 in the GRETIL text (1.68 in Pancham Sinh) · our translation

Veṣa here most likely means the outward marks of an ascetic, such as the robe or the ash, not leggings. But the point carries: clothes are there to serve the practice. The Indian government's Common Yoga Protocol, written for the International Day of Yoga, says it in one line: light and comfortable cotton clothes are preferred, to allow easy movement of the body.

Good to know

Before your first class, try your clothes at home: a seated forward bend, a downward dog and lying on your back. If you have to adjust anything, change it.

In an ashram in India

Ashrams are places of spiritual life, often monastic, and many publish a dress code. Read your ashram's own rules before you pack. As an example of what is asked, the Sivananda Yoga Vedanta Centres in India publish these rules for their ashrams and centres:

  • men and women must cover shoulders, midriff and legs;
  • tight-fitting, transparent and revealing clothes are not permitted, including shorts above the knee, leggings, low-cut and sleeveless T-shirts, and tank tops;
  • the dress code applies at all times, including during asana classes and swimming.

Not every ashram is this strict, but modest dress is the safe default everywhere. For a stay in Rishikesh or another holy town, pack:

Read our pages on the ashrams of Rishikesh and the Ganga aarti for the etiquette of the places themselves.

White, saffron and the colours of yoga

You will see many people in white in ashrams: in several lineages, white is the simple dress of students and of lay practitioners. Saffron or ochre (kāṣāya) is a different matter: it is the colour of renunciation, worn by sannyāsins, monks who have taken vows. Wearing white is never a problem; wearing saffron robes without being a renunciate can be taken as a lack of respect, especially in India.

In short

Wear what lets you move and breathe, practise barefoot, keep a layer for the end, and dress modestly in sacred places. Then forget your clothes and practise: that is the whole teaching of the verse above. For the rest of your kit, see choosing a yoga mat, and for your first steps, start yoga and yoga at home.

Questions people ask

Can I do yoga in leggings?

At home or in most Western studios, yes. Some ashrams in India do not allow them: the Sivananda Yoga Vedanta Centres, for example, list leggings among the clothing not permitted, even in posture classes. Bring loose trousers when you travel.

Should I wear socks for yoga?

Practise barefoot: bare feet grip the mat and let you feel the floor. Wear socks for the final relaxation or seated meditation if your feet get cold, and take them off again before standing postures.

What should a man wear for yoga?

The same principles: shorts or loose trousers that do not ride up, a T-shirt that stays in place when you bend forward. In India, shorts above the knee are often not accepted in ashrams and temples.

What should I wear in an ashram in India?

Loose, non-transparent clothes covering shoulders, midriff and legs, a shawl for early mornings and temple visits, and sandals you can slip off easily. Check the rules published by your ashram before you pack.
