In short

You can start yoga with free PDFs: our printable chart of postures, the first chapter of most of our books (no email needed), the Indian government's free Common Yoga Protocol, and public-domain translations of the Yoga Sutras, the Gita and the Hatha Yoga Pradipika. Our paid PDF guides add complete day-by-day programmes, with precautions and Sanskrit.

Many "yoga for beginners PDF" downloads online are scanned copies of protected books, or collections of drawings with approximate names. You do not need them. Here is what you can print free and legally today, and, for those who want a complete programme, what our own PDF books contain.

The Common Yoga Protocol (Government of India). Written by the Ministry of Ayush for the International Day of Yoga on 21 June, this booklet is free and official. It gives general guidelines (empty stomach, a mat, durrie or folded blanket, cotton clothes, no breath-holding unless instructed), then a 45-minute sequence: a prayer, loosening practices, standing, sitting, prone and supine postures, kapālabhāti and breathing (nāḍī śodhana with equal then 1:2 counts, śītalī, bhrāmarī), meditation and a closing resolve. It is a sound, simple programme for a healthy beginner; read its own contraindications, especially for kapālabhāti, a rapid breathing technique to leave aside if you are pregnant or have high blood pressure, a heart condition or a hernia. Editions differ: the 2019 edition is available as a PDF from a government site, and a 2022 edition is hosted on sanskrit.nic.in.

The classical texts, in public-domain translations. The Yoga Sutras by Charles Johnston, 1912, the Hatha Yoga Pradipika by Pancham Sinh, 1914 and the Bhagavad Gita by Edwin Arnold, 1885 can all be downloaded free and legally. Our page on the yoga books worth reading lists more editions, with what each is for.
