The Bihar School of Yoga, Satyananda's lineage at Munger

4 min read · Updated October 16, 2026 · sources checked October 17, 2026

In short

The Bihar School of Yoga was founded at Munger, on the Ganga in Bihar, in 1963 by Swami Satyananda Saraswati (1923-2009), a disciple of Swami Sivananda of Rishikesh. Its method, known as Satyananda Yoga, combines hatha yoga, prāṇāyāma, yoga nidra, meditation, kriya yoga, karma yoga and chanting, and is spread through its widely used manuals.

Munger is not a yoga resort. It is a district town in Bihar, on a wide bend of the Ganga, and on a hill above the river stands one of the most coherent yoga institutions of the twentieth century. If you have ever used a yoga nidra recording, followed a series of joint-loosening movements before your postures, or opened a thick manual on asana and prāṇāyāma, there is a good chance it came from here.

Swami Satyananda: from Sivananda to Munger

According to the school's official site, Swami Satyananda Saraswati was born in 1923 at Almora, in the Himalayan foothills. He left home in 1943 and found his guru, Swami Sivananda of Rishikesh, who initiated him into renunciation on 12 September 1947. In 1956 Sivananda taught him kriya yoga and gave him the mission to spread yoga "from door to door and shore to shore". He left the ashram and travelled as a wandering monk.

  • 1963: he establishes the Bihar School of Yoga at Munger. Its first public conference is held in January 1964, when, the school records, he declared that Munger would become a centre of yoga for the whole world.
  • 1967-1968: a nine-month international teacher training at Munger, then his first world tour.
  • 1983: his disciple Swami Niranjanananda Saraswati, who had come to live at the school as a child, takes over its presidency.
  • 1988: Satyananda leaves Munger and settles at Rikhia, in today's Jharkhand. He dies there on 5 December 2009.
  • 1994: Bihar Yoga Bharati is founded on the campus; 2000: the Yoga Publications Trust, which publishes the books.
  • 2013: the school marks fifty years with a World Yoga Convention at Munger.

The school describes its aim as the spread of "classical integral yoga", practical and simple, meant to meet the needs of modern life on every level.

The method: integral yoga, from the body to kriya

What people call Satyananda Yoga is not a posture style. It is a complete method in which every path has its place, a direct heir of Sivananda's yoga of synthesis:

PracticeWhat it involves at Bihar
Hatha yogapostures, introduced by the pawanmuktāsana series of joint and energy-freeing movements
Ṣaṭkarmathe six cleansing practices, such as jala neti
Prāṇāyāma, mudrā, bandhabreath control, seals and locks, taught progressively
Yoga nidrathe guided practice of "yogic sleep" systematised by Satyananda
Meditationantar mauna (inner silence), ajapa japa and others
Kriya yogathe advanced practices Sivananda taught him in 1956
Karma and bhakti yogawork as practice, chanting, kīrtan

The books from Munger

The Bihar School's influence spread above all through its books, which are found in yoga schools across the world:

  • Asana Pranayama Mudra Bandha (first edition 1969), drawn from Satyananda's teaching during the 1969 teacher training: a manual that many teachers keep on their shelves.
  • Meditations from the Tantras (1974).
  • Yoga Nidra (1976), the book that set out his method of guided relaxation.

They are modern works, protected by copyright; we do not quote them. For the classical texts behind them, read the Hatha Yoga Pradipika in Pancham Sinh's public-domain translation.

What a stay at Ganga Darshan looks like

The ashram on the hill, Ganga Darshan, does not offer drop-in classes. Its day, as described in our page on Munger, is a whole life: hatha yoga before breakfast, karma yoga through the day, chanting of the mahāmantra, yoga nidra after lunch, evening sādhanā. Its published rules are short and strict: no mobile phone, no Wi-Fi, no photography, stay on the premises, follow the routine. Applications must come at least a month ahead, and a room is never promised.

Elsewhere, a class "in the Satyananda tradition" usually opens with the pawanmuktāsana movements, moves through postures held calmly with awareness of the breath, adds a breathing practice, and ends with a short yoga nidra.

Who it suits

The Bihar method suits people who want a complete, gentle and progressive practice, including breath, relaxation and meditation, and those drawn to study. Its intensity is low to moderate in the body and high in discipline. On the levels of practice, its first steps suit true beginners; its kriya and advanced prāṇāyāma are for later, with a teacher.

Before you start

A painful fact deserves a sober mention. In 2016, Australia's Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse found that Swami Akhandananda, who ran the Satyananda Yoga Ashram at Mangrove Mountain in New South Wales from about 1974, had sexually abused children there. He had been convicted in 1989 on three counts, a conviction overturned by the High Court in 1991; he died in 1997. Two witnesses also made allegations against Swami Satyananda; the Commission considered them outside its scope and made no finding (SBS; AAP in The Guardian; Wikipedia, Bihar School of Yoga). Wherever you study, choose settings that take the protection of students seriously.

Finding an authentic teacher

The school states that it does not use social media: what you read elsewhere under its name is not its voice. Ask a teacher where, when and for how long they trained, and whether at Munger, at Bihar Yoga Bharati or in an affiliated centre. Bihar Yoga Bharati writes that the certificate of its two-month course is "of attendance and participation, and not a teacher certificate". Anyone selling a "Bihar certificate" or a place at Ganga Darshan through an agent is not the school.

The root of this lineage is Sivananda yoga, in Rishikesh. All the schools and paths: the paths of yoga.

Questions people ask

What is Satyananda Yoga?

The integrated method taught by the Bihar School of Yoga: hatha yoga with joint-freeing series and cleansing practices, prāṇāyāma, mudrās and bandhas, yoga nidra, meditation and kriya yoga, together with karma yoga (work as practice) and chanting.

Which books come from the Bihar School?

Among the best known: Asana Pranayama Mudra Bandha (first edition 1969), Yoga Nidra (1976) and Meditations from the Tantras (1974), all by Swami Satyananda, published today by the Yoga Publications Trust.

Can I visit the Bihar School of Yoga?

Only by applying in advance. Its visiting page asks for an application at least a month before, cannot promise a room and sets strict rules: no phone, no Wi-Fi, no photography, and the ashram routine from early morning.

Is the Bihar School of Yoga a university?

On the same campus, Bihar Yoga Bharati, founded in 1994 by Swami Niranjanananda, presents itself as an institute for advanced studies in yogic sciences. Its two-month course certificate is one of attendance, not a teacher certificate, it states.
