Thailand for yogis, the land of the hermit exercises
Updated October 17, 2026 · sources checked October 17, 2026
In short
Thailand is not a birthplace of yoga, but it has its own related tradition, the ruesi dat ton, the self-stretching exercises of the hermits, carved in statues at Wat Pho in Bangkok. It is also the home of nuad Thai, traditional Thai massage, on UNESCO's intangible heritage list since 2019. Since 15 September 2026, the visa exemption for tourism is 30 days.
Why come here for yoga
Thailand does not claim to be a cradle of yoga, and it does not need to. Its religion is Theravada Buddhism, followed by about 92.5 % of the population (2021 figure, Wikipedia), close to that of Sri Lanka. And it has a bodily tradition of its own that every yogi will recognise as a cousin: the ruesi dat ton.
Ruesi dat ton, the hermits' self-stretching
ऋषि
ṛṣi
A seer, a sage; the Thai ruesi, the hermit of the forest
Ruesi dat ton (ฤๅษีดัดตน) means "the hermit stretches himself". It is a set of postures, breathing and self-massage attributed to the ruesi, the forest hermits whose name comes from the Sanskrit ṛṣi. Its history is written in stone in Bangkok. After restoring Wat Pho as a royal temple in 1788, King Rama I ordered statues of hermits in these exercises, each inscribed with the ailment it addressed. Under Rama III, Prince Narongharirak oversaw the casting of 80 statues of hermits in stretching postures, while the court physicians had the knowledge of Thai medicine engraved around the temple (Wikipedia, Traditional Thai massage). Today a small rock garden at Wat Pho, the "Contorting Hermit Hill", still shows statues of massage and yoga-like positions (Wikipedia, Wat Pho).
This is not Indian hatha yoga, and should not be presented as such: it is a Thai tradition, rooted in the same Indian world of ascetics and sages, shaped by Thai medicine. Seeing those statues after studying the Haṭha Yoga Pradīpikā is a lesson in how ideas travel.
Nuad Thai, traditional Thai massage
In 2019 UNESCO inscribed Nuad Thai, traditional Thai massage on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. UNESCO describes it as part of "the art, science and culture of traditional Thai healthcare", a non-medicinal manual therapy with roots in village self-care, now taught as a formal system. Wat Pho remains a centre where it is taught and practised.
Meditation
The Suan Mokkh International Dharma Hermitage, founded by the monk Buddhadāsa Bhikkhu in 1989 in a coconut grove in southern Thailand, publishes on its official site that its English-language ten-day silent retreats start on the 1st of each month and end on the 11th, with registration in person on the last day of the previous month, no advance booking. Check the site shortly before you go: the notice we read dates from 2021.
What Thailand does not offer is an Indian yoga lineage. The many yoga retreats and teacher trainings advertised in Thailand are mostly modern and international. Choose them for their teachers, not their beaches.
Sacred places
- Wat Pho (Wat Phra Chetuphon), just south of the Grand Palace in Bangkok: home of a 46-metre reclining Buddha and of more than a thousand Buddha images. Its marble inscriptions and illustrations, on medicine, massage points, history and religion, were registered by UNESCO's Memory of the World programme at the Asia-Pacific level on 21 February 2008 and at the international level on 27 May 2011, according to the temple's official site.
- The Sala Rai pavilions and the cloisters of Wat Pho, where the medical plaques with massage-point figures are placed.
- Any village wat at dawn, when monks walk their alms round: watch from a respectful distance.
When to go
Thailand has three seasons: hot from mid-February to mid-May, rainy with the south-west monsoon from about mid-May to mid-October (in Bangkok, September is the wettest month), and cool from mid-October to mid-February (Wikipedia, Geography of Thailand). The cool season is the most comfortable for practice in Bangkok and the north. The UK FCDO warns of strong riptides when swimming during the monsoon season.
Getting there
- By air: Bangkok Suvarnabhumi is the main international gateway; Wat Pho is in the old city, Rattanakosin.
- Visa exemption: from 15 September 2026, nationals of 60 countries and territories, including the UK, the US, Canada, Australia, India and France, may enter for tourism only for up to 30 days; the former 60-day exemption ended that day (Tourism Authority of Thailand; FCDO). The FCDO adds that it does not cover business, and that entries over land borders are normally limited to two a year. A longer stay or a study programme needs a visa from a Thai embassy before travel.
- Digital Arrival Card: since 1 May 2025, all foreign visitors must complete the Thailand Digital Arrival Card online within three days before arriving (FCDO).
Budget
The tourist visa exemption is free. On 17 October 2026 we could not read a dated official ticket price for Wat Pho: check the temple's official website before your visit. Courses, retreats and massage training are not published in a form we can date; ask for a written quote. The FCDO notes that overstaying costs 500 baht a day.
Etiquette
From the Tourism Authority of Thailand's temple guide:
- Dress modestly: sleeved shirts, long trousers or skirts below the knee; enter barefoot; step over the raised threshold, not on it.
- Never point your feet at a Buddha image; do not touch or point at statues, walk around them clockwise, and never raise yourself higher than them.
- Women should not touch a monk or his robes; to give him something, hand it to a man or set it down for the monk to take.
- Remove hat and sunglasses, silence your phone, speak softly.
Two laws to know (FCDO): criticising the Thai monarchy is a crime with long prison sentences, and possessing or using any vape or e-cigarette is illegal.
Health and safety
Read the UK FCDO advice (updated 12 October 2026) or France Diplomatie if you are French. The FCDO advises against all but essential travel to the provinces of Pattani, Yala and Narathiwat and parts of Songkhla near the Malaysian border, and to areas within 20 km of the land border with Cambodia. Emergency numbers: police 191, ambulance 1669, tourist police 1155. Road accident rates are high: wear a helmet on any scooter. For massage, tell the practitioner about any injury, pregnancy or medical condition.
Choosing a retreat or a training here
Ask, in writing:
- Who teaches, from which lineage, trained where? If the course mixes yoga and Thai massage, which part comes from which tradition?
- Which visa is required for the length of the course? The 30-day exemption is for tourism only.
- What certificate will you receive? Read what Yoga Alliance does and does not check, and our page on the 200-hour teacher training.
- For a massage course: is the certificate recognised by the Thai public health authorities?
Red flags: ruesi dat ton sold as "ancient Indian yoga", medical promises, pressure to pay in cash on arrival. If you want the Indian source, see Rishikesh; other destinations are on our yoga travel page.
Questions people ask
How long can I stay in Thailand without a visa in 2026?
Since 15 September 2026, nationals of 60 countries and territories, including the UK, the US, Canada, Australia, India and France, can enter without a visa for tourism for up to 30 days, replacing the former 60-day rule (Tourism Authority of Thailand; UK FCDO, read 17 October 2026). Longer stays or a course need a visa.
What is ruesi dat ton?
Ruesi dat ton (ฤๅษีดัดตน) means the self-stretching of the hermits: a Thai tradition of postures and self-massage attributed to the ruesi, the sages (Sanskrit ṛṣi). Under King Rama III, 80 statues of hermits in these postures were cast for Wat Pho, each with a description of the ailment it addressed.
Can I learn Thai massage at Wat Pho?
Wat Pho has long been a centre of Thai traditional medicine and still houses a school of Thai medicine and massage within the temple. Check the courses and conditions directly with the school, and ask whether its certificate is recognised by the Thai public health authorities.
Is Thailand a good place for a 200-hour yoga teacher training?
Many trainings are offered, mostly in modern international styles. Judge each one on its teachers, syllabus and certificate, and check your visa: the 30-day exemption covers tourism only.
