Transcendental Meditation, origins, method and cost

In short

Transcendental Meditation (TM) is a mantra meditation taught by Maharishi Mahesh Yogi from 1955. According to the organisation, it is practised sitting comfortably with eyes closed, 20 minutes twice a day, with a personal mantra received from a certified teacher over a four-day course. In the United States the published course fee is 980 dollars, with income-based rates.

Transcendental Meditation is one of the best-known forms of meditation in the West, and one of the few with a direct link to Rishikesh. It is also a registered, paid method taught by one organisation. Here is what is documented about its origins, its method as the organisation itself publishes it, its cost, and the evidence.

Origins: from Jyotir Math to the world

The teacher. Maharishi Mahesh Yogi (birth date disputed, between 1911 and 1918 depending on the source) studied physics at Allahabad University, then became a disciple and secretary of Swami Brahmānanda Sarasvatī, called Guru Dev, the Śaṅkarācārya of Jyotir Maṭh, the monastery in the Himalaya founded in the Advaita Vedānta lineage of Śaṅkara. Guru Dev died in 1953.

The method. From 1955 Maharishi began teaching in public what he first called "Transcendental Deep Meditation", then Transcendental Meditation. In 1958 he announced his plan to spread it worldwide, and his world tours began the following year. The organisation today says he "revived and systematized" the technique.

Rishikesh. In 1961 he was allotted forest land near Rishikesh, on the east bank of the Ganga, for an ashram, and held his first TM teacher training course there in April 1961, according to accounts of the movement. The ashram is known today as Chaurasi Kutia, inside the Rajaji Tiger Reserve.

The Beatles, 1968. The four Beatles came to the Rishikesh ashram in February 1968 for a course planned to last three months. None completed it: Ringo Starr left after about ten days and Paul McCartney after about five weeks, John Lennon and George Harrison later. The stay is linked to many songs later recorded by the band. By mid-May 1968, back in the West, the Beatles had publicly distanced themselves from Maharishi, though Harrison remained close to Indian spirituality.

Afterwards. The ashram fell into ruin after the movement left it. The Uttarakhand forest department opened it to visitors in 2015; it is now often called the "Beatles Ashram", with paid entry. Maharishi died on 5 February 2008 at his home in Vlodrop, in the Netherlands.

The method, as the organisation publishes it

According to tm.org (consulted 16 October 2026):

  • TM is practised sitting comfortably, eyes closed, for 20 minutes, twice a day.
  • It is described as effortless: the mind "naturally settles inward into quieter levels of awareness", "without asking you to concentrate or control anything".
  • It is taught one-to-one by a certified teacher over four consecutive days: a private session on day 1 (about 1 to 1.5 hours) in which the student receives a personal mantra and instructions; three group meetings on days 2-4 (or app content and online meetings in a hybrid format); follow-up meetings at about 10 and 20 days.
  • The organisation states that TM is not a religion and requires no belief.

The mantras themselves are not published; students are asked to keep them private. This is the main difference from the traditional practices on this site: Indian mantra meditation (japa) uses mantras whose words and meaning are known, such as Om or Om namaḥ śivāya, and stresses their meaning.

What it costs

On 16 October 2026, the US organisation's fee page stated:

ItemWhat tm.org says
Course fee (US)980 dollars
Reduced ratesincome-based rates for eligible households; a student rate; partial scholarships funded by donations
Paymentin full, or four monthly instalments
Includedpersonal instruction, the group or hybrid sessions, follow-up meetings, ongoing support from TM teachers, access to the TM app

Fees differ by country and change over time. Check the national organisation of your country before deciding.

What studies show

TM has been studied more than most single meditation brands, often by researchers linked to the movement, which calls for caution.

  • Blood pressure. In 2013 an American Heart Association scientific statement reviewed alternative approaches to lowering blood pressure. It gave TM a class IIb recommendation with level of evidence B: it "may be considered" in clinical practice, while describing the evidence for behavioural therapies overall as modest, mixed or inconsistent. Other meditation techniques received class III.
  • Stress, anxiety, depression. A 2014 systematic review in JAMA Internal Medicine (47 randomised trials, 3,515 participants) found moderate evidence of small improvements in anxiety, depression and pain for mindfulness programmes, and no evidence that meditation programmes did better than active treatments such as medication or exercise.

In short: TM is a reasonable, gentle practice; claims beyond these modest findings are not supported by the evidence reviewed here.

TM or traditional mantra meditation?

TMTraditional japa
Teachercertified TM teacher, requireda guru for initiated mantras; public mantras can be practised freely
Mantrapersonal, kept privateknown words with a known meaning
Attentioneffortless, no concentrationrepetition with attention to meaning (Yoga Sutra 1.28)
Costcourse feefree, or the teacher's custom

Both have a place. If you want to start without a fee, the 10-minute guided meditation and how to meditate are a good beginning, and the history of Rishikesh is told on our Rishikesh guide and the page on the Beatles Ashram.

Questions people ask

How much does TM cost?

On 16 October 2026, tm.org listed the US course fee at 980 dollars, with income-based and student rates and partial scholarships. Fees differ by country; check the national TM organisation.

Can I learn TM for free from a book or video?

Not as TM: the organisation teaches it only through a certified teacher who gives a personal mantra. Free mantra meditation from the Indian traditions, such as japa with Om, is described on this site.

Is TM a religion?

The organisation states that TM is not a religion and requires no belief. Its roots are in the Indian tradition through Maharishi's teacher, a Shankaracharya of Jyotir Math.

Does TM lower blood pressure?

A 2013 American Heart Association statement judged that TM may be considered for lowering blood pressure, with modest evidence (class IIb, level B). It is not a substitute for treatment.
